Kelly has been an integral part of Rising Goddess Fitness since she joined the teaching team in December 2021. Specializing in flow and freestyle, she helps students tap into their sensual side. Kelly’s teaching style is both inspiring and empowering—she is a whole VIBE. She has a unique ability to inspire you to get out of your head and let your body lead.

Kelly moved to Illinois in 2021 from San Francisco and has been poling for ten years and teaching pole for seven. We are thrilled to have Kelly share her journey of reconnecting with pole post-partum. Her story is a powerful testament to resilience, dedication, and the transformative power of dance. We had the pleasure of interviewing her to delve into her experiences, challenges, and triumphs as she found her way back to the pole. Here’s what she had to say:

Can you share a bit about your journey back to pole after having your baby?

I am still finding my way back and refiguring what pole is for me now. I gave birth 8 months ago (I came back to dance around 7 weeks after giving birth) and feel like I am still getting back to myself. I know that dance needs to remain a big part of my life and making time for it will make me a better mom. It’s harder to find time now but always worth it when I do.

How did you feel physically and mentally when you first started practicing again?

Physically, I felt out of touch with my body. Mentally, it was a mix of joy and frustration—joy from being back and moving, frustration from not being able to do what I once could. The motivation to return stemmed from the need for ‘me time’ and the therapeutic benefits of dance.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when returning to your practice?

Balancing taking care of a baby while making time for myself was challenging. The first few times back, I felt “mom guilt” and had a hard time being present and not checking my phone. It got easier with time!

How did you adapt your training to accommodate your postpartum body?

I had to shift my mindset about pole dance. Now, I don’t even think about it as “training.” I focus on the love I have for dancing and see it as essential “me time.”

Were there any specific exercises or techniques that helped you regain strength and flexibility?

I went to pelvic floor therapy for the first few months after giving birth. This helped rebuild my core and strengthen my pelvic floor. Highly recommend!

How did your support system (family, friends, studio community) help you during your transition back?

My husband encourages me to get back and dance, happily taking on childcare duties.

What advice would you give to new moms who are considering returning to pole/aerial?

Be kind to yourself! Give yourself the gift of dance time. Appreciate what your newly changed body can do.

How important was self-care and rest in your journey back to fitness?

Self-care and rest were crucial. Listening to my body and finding a balance between rest and movement was key.

How do you balance your time between being a mom and finding time for your training?

With an 8-month-old, I still struggle with this balance. I do what I can and try to appreciate my studio time while I am there.

What are some tips for managing time and energy effectively?

Prioritize and plan. I try to schedule my dance sessions and stick to them. Setting realistic goals and not overcommitting helps manage my energy.

How has returning to pole/aerial positively impacted your overall well-being?

For me, being at the dance studio is my physical exercise, time with friends, and dance therapy. It gives me something I don’t get anywhere else, leaving me in a better physical, mental, and emotional place.

What personal achievements have you celebrated since coming back to your practice?

When I go in now, the only thing I am looking for is to lose myself in dance. I get that during freestyle dances, and it fills me up.

How has Rising Goddess Fitness supported you in your journey back to pole/aerial?

RGF has been very understanding that my life has changed and patient with me taking my time to get back. My instructors (Ashley and Meghan) have been encouraging and supportive, and the RGF community has warmly welcomed my return. It’s been great to see everyone again!

What message would you like to share with other moms in the community who are hesitant to return to their fitness routines?

It’s good to get back to your fitness routine, even if you need to re-enter with a new mindset. Life is different now, and that’s okay! Taking it easy and enjoying the journey is important. It’s not about what tricks you can do but about the love for dance.
